Jocelyn Erin Bowen

Hi Everyone

We are ecstatic to announce the arrival of Jocelyn Erin Bowen, the most wonderful little bundle of joy who entered the world in the wee hours of Monday morning (14th Sep). She weighs a very health 4.26 kg.

Mom, dad and baby are doing very well and we expect the little on to be home in the next 3-4day.

Have a look at our pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/the.bowenz/14092009#

Adopt a Pothole (seriously, I kid you not)

“The Empowerment Gateway Group announced recently that they have received authorization from the Govan Mbeki Municipality to repair potholes in their area of jurisdiction.

The authorization has enabled Empowerment Gateway to launch the Adopt-a-Pothole programme.

The program is a new Social-Economic Enterprise which addresses key fundamental needs in South Africa , being road infrastructure, maintenance and the alleviation of unemployment and poverty in local communities.

The Empowerment Gateway is now inviting the business sector to participate as sponsors and custodians in the Adopt-a-Pothole programme.

The programme has been designed as a practical business and enterprise development incubator and it will recruit, train and mentor unemployed individuals as business unit caretakers, admin and support officers and pothole doctors.*

The programme has the potential to create over 20 000 income earning opportunities nationally over a five year period.

These workers would then be repairing over six million potholes over the five years.

The Adopt-a-Pothole programme will not only be addressing the unemployment issue, it will also help everyday road users to reduce typical repair costs associated with potholes.

For more information about the Adopt-a-Pothole programme, you can visit www.adopt-a-pothole.org <

my first 10

Hi Guys

Most of you already know that I am training to run the London marathon on the 26th of April. For the past month I have been doing a number of 5km runs and feeling confident that I could take on the big 10km.

So this morning I entered the Tadworth 10 (http://www.tadworth.org.uk/Tadten.html). It was probably the coldest day I have experienced in the UK with our car measuring the temperature at -6.5 Deg C, but that was not going to stop me.

The race consisted of two laps of challenging hillside which almost broke me. I am used to running 5km in around 28minutes, but my first lap took 55minutes, I decided this was due to all the hills and sub zero temperature. I then, with a lot of pain and grimace, finished the second lap in a disappointing time of 1hour and 48 minutes.

But the story does not end there, on reflection of my poor time I realised that I had actually run 10 miles and not 10kms… yes I have taken a leap from running my usual 5kms to a whopping 17kms in a fairly respectable time. The lesson learned is when you run a race in the UK think in miles and not Kms!

Here are some pics from the run along with a pic of a 30cm icicle which formed outside our bedroom window (taken at about 14h00 this afternoon)

All the best

Lawrence
